Default Need help with poker tournament?

My husband and I host a weekly poker tournament. We do a $5 buy in (1 rebuy) and usually have about 5 or 6 people over (sometimes more). The chip set we have has white, red, blue, green, and black chips. I'd say its probably about a 500 chip set. We play tournament style with only first and second place receiving money. Now, my questions:- How much should I make the chips worth (what is standard)?-How many should each player get?- If we wanted to do a ring game, how would we go about distributing the chips with a $5 buy in?

That depends on a lot of things. There is no'standard'as such. All states/countries have different values. If you're playing limit, small values can be better. If no-limit, large values are more fun. Me and my friends play no-limit Hold'Em with a similar set, using $1,000, $2,000, $5,000, $10,000 $20,000 and $50,000, but it;s up to personal taste, really. As for how many? We deal out all the low value chips evenly, have 5 less of the next value, and five less of the next, and so on.'Till you get to really high values, and then only have one or two chips each. Different for different types of poker though. For High-Low or Omaha, different line-ups are better. It's up to you. Good Luck. May all your pairs be pocket Aces!

I've been dealing poker and running tournaments for 22 years. It's for the love of the game that I've done it this long, and still going! When running home games. Especially low limit, like $5 buy-in's, with just a few players, you might want to keep all the colors the same denomintaion, and/or value and give each player 40 chips. Start with a $1/$2 blind and increase it (usually doubled) every 10 - 20 min. Once you get a few more players, OR up the buy-in, I would suggest this: ~ Green $25 ~ Black $100 ~ Purple/White (or another color)$500 ~ Give them each $2000 to start with this set up: 16 Green ~11 Black ~ 1 Purple/White ~ start with a $25/$50 blind structure and increase the blinds every 10 min. - 20 min. depending on how many tourneys you will be doing each nite. Also, the re-buy should be worth an additional $1500 - $2000, so just give them 3 Purple/White chips and 5 Black ships. Keep me posted on how it goes, and if you need anymore questions answered, keep me in mind.
