Default Position in a 6 handed game of no limit holdem?

When someone says he raised it to 3x the bb in early position do they refer to the blinds or to utg or to utg +1? If you say that utg and utg+1 are in early position would the blinds be in late position? If so what about the button and CO then. Does your hand range increase in the blinds even though you are first to act post flop?

raising 3x BB means just that and the blinds are considered late position due to the fact that they are the ones to act last

As with most things in poker, it depends on the opponent. Early position in a shorthanded game is usually UTG and UTG+1. The button and the cutoff are always late position. Preflop the blinds are late but after the flop they're early, so I think of them as early position most of the time. My hand range from the BB is pretty big all of the time, but 6 handed you should start playing some more hands from the blinds.

If it's pre-flop in a 6-handed game he would be under the gun just right of the big blind. No the blinds would not be late position. In early position you only want to play premium hands. don't try to play mediocre hands, it will only get you into trouble. For more on position, please read Learn to Win Holdem's article on position. when someone says they raise from early position, they always mean utg/utg+1, and late position is always the button/coi've been a little confused with this as well in the past, and came up with my own theory: the blinds are separate, they are not in any position at allthink of it this way: when you are not in the blind, you have to call the full amount of a raise, but when you aren't in the blind, you don't, which means the price on your call is better than usual, even though you will be out of position for the rest of the hand, so things balance themselves out...therefore, your hand range should increase when in the blind, not only because of the good price you will usually be getting but also because by playing your blinds like playing from early position, you will become an easy target for someone to pick on because people will notice that you aren't defending your blind unless you have a strong enough hand to play from early position
