I'm guessing that you are talking about online poker, although that is an assumption on my part.If you are talking about online, I recommend you start off with a sit and go. The concept is, there is a set number of entrants and as soon as enough people sign up, the tournament starts. On a popular site like Poker Stars or Full Tilt, they have stakes from $1 right up to $1,000 or more, and everything in between. The size of the sit and go is always specified and it can range from a single table right up to 180 players or so.But the nature of these tournaments means that there is always one available, at the stakes you want to play and in the form you want to play (limit, no limit, pot limit, Omaha, HORSE, Hold'em, Razz - you name it).Cut your teeth on that, just to get a feel for it. And then later think about playing some larger tournaments. That's my advice. If you happened to be talking about real life. Just grab a copy of Card Player magazine. All the tournaments are pretty much listed in there. The World Series of Poker Circuit Events are a nice simple fun event. With buy ins as low as $300.
