apologies for the noob questions,but if a card game says its $5/10 with $10 ante...... i know the 5 is the small blind, 10 is the big blind....but what is an ante?also, if a tournament is advertised as;"$100 + $20", the $100 is the buy-in fee, but what is the $20????also, i know a'rake'is a % that people pay per hand to play live poker. if a rake is advertised as 5% or $5 ... the casino takes 5% or $5 ... whichever is bigger ... do they take it from EACH player at the table? each person that saw the flop? the turn? the river? or the winner of the pot?many thanks

The ante is the amount you have to pay to get into a hand. In Texas hold em, the first two players have to do this without looking at their cards hence the tem blind. The small blind only has to put in half the ante while big blind has to put the whole thing in. If you don't your out of the tournament. Everyone else can look at their cards and decide if they want to play that hand. I have no idea about the + 20 deal but the rake is the percentage of the total pot the house gets. Because you play poker against other people, not the casino, they take the percentage to make money off the game. Basically it is like paying a fee for the use of a dealer and the casinos facilities and they take it right off the top. They usually do it tournament style so after everyone pays in, they take their cut, and the rest goes to the over all winner. In a straight cash game, they moslty just take the percentage everytime someone"buys"chips.

$10 would be what each player has to put into the pot after they are dealt their first 2 cards it they want to remain in the game. The big blind has already done this regardless. The small blind has half in regardless, he must put the other $5 in to stay in.$20 would be the rebuy. If you have lost all of your money and want to continue, you can buy in again for only $20.The rules for this vary by casio. But usually it's 5% from the winnings paid out each hand.

Ok first an ante is a foced bet, just like a blind, but everyone at the table has to put one in, it is most times 10% of the big blind, this money is dead money and goes into the middle of the pot before the cards are put out. The winner of the pot gets the antes in the pot. Now as far as the extra money on the buy-in goes to the dealers, dealer get money per down that they deal, and this extra money is held back for the dealers and does not go into the prize pool. And as for your last question, the rake is a percent taken out of the pot to pay for the cards, table, and dealers. In low limit games the rake in most casinos is 10% of the pot up to 4 dollars on hold em, and up to a max of 5 dollars on stud games, stud takes the extra dollar because they have 5 betting rounds and hold em only has 4 betting rounds. So if there is 35 dollars in the pot, the dealer would take out 3 dollars, and when the pot gets to 40 dollars or more the max rake of 4 dollars is taken out. Another dollar is also taken out of the potfor a jackpot rake, this money is used to pay out bad beat jackpots that hit in a casino. If there is a side pot they rake them as well, so if you have a main pot of 22 dollars and a side pot of 20 dollars the dealer would take 2 dollars from the main pot, and another 2 dollars from the side pot. There is also two other ways they take rake, it's called a time rake where they will ask for money from each player very 30 minutes or every hour. And they play till the next time rake is due. Also they take rake on the total of the pot instead of the percent, so it would be 1 dollar on 20, one on 60, one on 120, and 1 on 240, but these kind of rakes are only taken on high limit games. Most casinos use the 10% rake, the only casino in Vegas that still has 5% games are the horseshoe, all other games are 10% rake.
